The Remastering, what was done:

As the original release contained quite a bit of "hiss", a noise reduction process was used. A very small amount of reverb was also added. This was all accomplished digitally. The original release contained an edit on disc two spanning tracks 4 and 5, which resulted in the track fading away to near inaudibility during a guitar solo, and coming back later also unexpectedly. In this new release, I have chosen to edit-in the corresponding parts (choosing less obtrusive edit points) from a different source material. The newly edited-in portion is unknown to me as far as date of the show (hopefully someone will be able to identify it). It is from a "Lamb" show that has been in my collection for approximately one year. An effort was made to "match" the sound by equalization. The transitions in and out of the new edit are noticeable if you are listening for them, but might very well pass by undetected in casual listening. A little overall compression and limiting was used as well as balance adustment of "The Musical Box".

The Remastering: The original release contained a very large amount of hiss, which was reduced in level. Some bass and low bass was added in the form of bass harmonics, and the recording was equalized to smooth out the midrange. Overall limiting and compression was also used, all of which was accomplished digitally. The end result is the recording is cleaner, clearer and more pleasing to the ear than the earlier release of this material.

The remastering:

The original CD source material contained quite a bit of hiss, and was lacking in highs, so hiss was reduced, and some brilliance was restored through equalization. A slight amount of overall compression and limiting was also applied. The material had been on LP (remember these?) at one time and there were some significant pops that were removed using an audio editor. A few minor "crackles" remain, these can be heard mostly between songs where the phonograph needle had been placed (today's equivalent, a CD player's "next track" button). Sadly, there were two record "skips" in a not-included song, "High Flying Bird," which could not be repaired. The second side of the disc gave challenges of a different sort. The first half of the songs on the source material sounded very different from and had a different volume level than the later tracks. The tracks now sound virtually identical. One final note: On the source CD, the final song ended abruptly in the middle of the last note. This circumstance led to the building of a "fake ending". This was accomplished by stretching the final note digitally to a length of several seconds and fading. Applause (from several spots earlier in the show) was mixed in to complete the illusion of an actual ending. All of the above operations were performed in the digital domain.

October Project

Bottom Line, New York City

July 12, 1994.

April 14, 2003. This is a great band that had a very short lifetime unfortunately, putting out only two albums in the early 90's. This is a remastered audience recording of an inspired performance before a friendly, hometown crowd. The band performs material from both of their releases. Mary Fahl is a unique singer with a powerful, dramatic presentation. The songs are dynamic with soaring harmonies and beautiful, emotional melodies.

SLuRP 004, the remastering: My source disc contained "crackles," almost as if the recording had once been on vinyl, which seems unlikely given the show date. Whatever their origin, these sounds were, for the most part, filtered completely out. The original release had almost no high end and contained a lot of "mud". Additionally there was a cycling high frequency distortion. Mary Fahl's voice was also far in the background. Careful equalization has moved her voice forward, reduced the audio"mud", and de-emphasized the cycling HF distortion.

This has been easily the most difficult SLuRP to work with (as well as the least satisfying), going through five different "final" versions. The final quality of this release is B to B+.

King Crimson is one of the all time great bands in my opinion. Information about them can be found in many places and this is one of them:

http://www.disciplineglobalmobile.com/bio/

Led by one of the world’s most unique guitarists, Robert Fripp, they have gone through many personnel changes over the years. The ‘71 Toronto show is from the band’s "Islands" era. The line-up for this show is as follows:

Robert Fripp - Guitar, Mellotron
Mel Collins - Sax, Flute, Mellotron
Boz Burrell - Bass Guitar, Lead Vocal
Ian Wallace - Drums, Backing Vocal
Peter Sinfield - Words, Sounds & Visions

The remastering: I received the show which had been transferred from cassette to CD. The music was buried in a layer of hiss, and ranged from the nearly inaudible to the incredibly loud. The following processes were accomplished inside the computer: Noise reduction, equalization, addition of bass harmonics, compression and manual level changes. Applause from other parts of the performance was digitally spliced into a few areas to eliminate that "chopped off feel". Other digital editing to improve the flow of the disc was also performed. All in all I’m pleased with how it came out.
